Westwood Fire Stopped Before Engulfing Neighboring Homes
An aggressive attack prevented a fire on the second story of a house in Westwood from spreading to adjacent trees and neighboring homes.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to 510 S Warner Av in Westwood for a reported structure fire at 10:10 AM on December 4, 2015 . Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from the 2nd floor of a 3,290 square-foot, two story single family dwelling.
The quick, aggressive, coordinated fire attack and vertical ventilation successfully stopped the fire from spreading beyond the area of origin. Firefighters, aware of the vegetation surrounding the structure, ensured all exposures were protected and prevented the fire from damaging the homes standing only feet away.
The home was not equipped with adequate, working smoke alarms. Studies from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show that a working smoke alarm can reduce the risk of dying in a residential fire by upwards of 50%.
Fortunately, the two occupants, 85 year-old woman and 90 year-old male, escaped the building without serious injury.
Chief Alberto Abarca activated the Smoke Alarm Field Education (S.A.F.E.) program.Crews from LAFD and our partners, MySafe:LA canvassed the neighborhood and provided/installed free smoke alarms to homes needing them.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and dollar loss is being tabulated.
