Leimert Park Structure Fire Claims Two Lives
Despite the quick actions of firefighters, two people were sadly found deceased following a house fire.
On July 22, 2018, the Los Angeles Fire Department was notified at 11:08 AM of a structure fire in the 3900 block of South 2nd Avenue. The first company to arrive was an LAFD ambulance returning from a previous incident when they saw smoke nearby coming from a one-story home in Leimert Park. The two firefighters from the ambulance immediately assisted an adult resident hanging out of a window and another adult from inside the structure while performing forcible entry on the metal bars covering the doors and windows of the home. As additional firefighters arrived moments later, crews aggressively extinguished the heavy flames throughout the residence in just 22 minutes using a coordinated fire attack with vertical ventilation. However, the blaze had already taken the life of an 8-year-old boy and his 67-year-old grandmother who reportedly went inside to save him.
Fortunately, several other members escaped the home including an 83-year-old woman who was transported to a local hospital in fair condition and a 42-year-old woman who declined transportation after being medical evaluated. Additionally, a 13-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl escaped the home uninjured.
Volunteers from the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team convened to support the grieving family and bystanders. The cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Coroner and the cause of the fire is still under active investigation by the LAFD Arson/ Counter- Terrorism Section.
