LAFD Welcomes Interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva

LOS ANGELES - Prior to being appointed Interim Fire Chief on February 21, 2025, Ronnie Villanueva dedicated 41 years to the Los Angeles Fire Department, serving in a variety of assignments across the city. Over the course of his distinguished career, he rose through the ranks from Firefighter to Engineer, Captain I, Captain II, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, and ultimately Chief Deputy. His special duty assignments included serving as a Captain at Drill Tower 89, Battalion Chief in the Community Liaison Office, and Assistant Chief of Homeland Security and the Port of Los Angeles. After retiring seven months ago as Chief Deputy of Emergency Operations, he now returns to lead the department as Interim Fire Chief.

Beyond his professional achievements, Chief Villanueva has been a strong advocate for formal education and vocational training. He earned an Executive Master’s Degree in Leadership from the University of Southern California in 2022 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Studies from California State University, Long Beach. A graduate of the LAFD Leadership Academy, he has also completed specialized training in Sea-Based Defense Support of Civil Authorities, Enhanced Incident Management, and Unified Command at the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). His extensive education and leadership experience have positioned him as a Principal on the National Fire Protection Association’s technical committee on Firefighter Safety and Health, where his expertise has contributed to enhancing firefighter safety not only within the LAFD but across the fire service.

With decades of experience, a deep commitment to public safety, and a passion for mentorship, Chief Villanueva steps into this role ready to lead with integrity and vision. The men and women of the LAFD welcome him back and look forward to his leadership in guiding our organization.
