LAFD Keeps Brush Fire Small Despite Rugged Terrain and Heavy Brush

Tuesday, August 16, 2022

CHATSWORTH - LAFD firefighters battled a brush fire in Chatsworth in rugged terrain, where tall trees and heavy brush had caught fire. In less than two hours, firefighters built containment lines, which stretched around the two-acre footprint, keeping nearby homes from harm.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a brush fire near De Soto Ave and the 118 Freeway at 1:31 PM on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. Firefighters initially found one-quarter-acre of medium-to-heavy brush, including tall eucalyptus trees, burning in rugged terrain, with a nearby neighborhood to the east. Over 90 firefighters battled by ground and air for almost two hours in nearly triple-digit outside temperatures to keep the affected area to approximately two acres. The nearby neighborhood remained untouched, and containment lines now stretch around the circumference of the scorched area.

Working crews located some bones that appear to be human remains, that are unrelated to the fire. LAFD Arson Section is working with LAPD and has requested a Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner to perform an investigation to determine cause of death.

A thank you goes out to several other groups who supported this incident with us: our colleagues at Los Angeles County Fire Department (who responded in automatic aid to the incident), LAFD CERT volunteers, and LAFD Crew 3 volunteer hand crew.
