LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic Reunites With Young Drowning Victim He Helped Save

Tuesday, December 4, 2018

Westchester - Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Chief Ralph Terrazas and members of the LAFD joined a young drowning survivor and her family as they were reunited with the LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic who helped save her life.

The survivor, 4-year-old Sophia Rouse, nearly drowned in a resort pool in Hawaii earlier this year. Firefighter/Paramedic Daniel Harris was on vacation in Maui when a dramatic scene unfolded. While playing in the pool, a young Quaid Tognazzini noticed Sophia Rouse floating facedown and pointed her out to his grandfather, Dr Gary Fredericks.  Dr Fredericks, checked her pulse and immediately pulled her from the pool, initiating CPR.  When he called for help, Firefighter Daniel Harris ran to assisted.  He took over compressions while Dr Frederick continued providing ventilations. Due to their tremendous teamwork,  professional training and reflexive actions to help young Sophia, she regained consciousness and was transported to a local hospital, eventually making a full recovery.

Sophia and her family flew to Los Angeles specifically to meet and thank Firefighter/Paramedic Harris at his fire station in Westchester. News Media was invited to join Chief Terrazas, members of the LAFD and Sophia’s family at a press conference on Tuesday, December 4th, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. at Fire Station 5, in Westchester CA.
