LAFD Battles Flames in Downtown School District Warehouse
More than 120 Los Angeles Firefighters battled an intense blaze in a downtown school district warehouse Thursday afternoon, preventing flames from causing injury or spreading to nearby buildings.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned at 1:54 PM on October 3, 2019 by a 9-1-1 caller reporting a fire within a structure at 1425 South San Pedro Street in the Fashion District of downtown Los Angeles. LAFD crews arrived quickly to find a 250' x 100' L-shaped one story Los Angeles Unifed School District warehouse already well involved with fire.
Firefighters mounted a fierce interior offense against the fast moving flames, but were driven back in ten minutes time by intense fire and structural compromise that rendered the structure untenable.
With a well-coordinated transition to defensive operations that prevented injury or damage to adjacent structures and vehicles on the property, the contingent of 123 Firefighters under the command of Deputy Chief Phillip Fligiel skilfully confined the fire to structure of origin, extinguishing the flames in just 52 minutes. The LAUSD warehouse was not located near a school, and no students were on the site.
Fire loss to the warehoue building is still being tabulated. The cause of the major emergency fire remains under active investigation.
