 Status Update: Oro Vista Avenue Closure

According to Los Angeles County Public Works, the continuous storm activity over the last several weeks requires ongoing releases of large volumes of water from the Big Tujunga Dam, which it operates. These releases are necessary to manage the reservoir level, which protects communities downstream from flooding. Releasing water helps ensure that the reservoir does not get too full from recent and upcoming storms.  

The significant amount of water flowing from the Big Tujunga Dam, combined with the downstream runoff that naturally occurs from storms, will continue to significantly impact Oro Vista Avenue. The street is expected to remain impassable for several weeks or longer, depending on both weather conditions and the volume of water release required to safely operate the dam and protect the community downstream.

Public safety and dispatch personnel are alerted to the situation, and resources are deployed to respond to emergency calls.  Additionally, on March 17, 2023, City crews will conduct work on the Conover Fire Rd. for improved access to the Riverwood community by emergency resources.

Residents are advised to prepare and take all necessary precautions. Do not attempt to cross the waterflow. Call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies. Report all City services issues to 3-1-1 or https://lacity.gov/myla311.

Due to amount of water flowing in Big Tujunga Canyon, access to the Eby Canyon / Riverwood Community at the Arizona Crossing is closed until further notice.

The current rainstorm has caused localized flooding along the northern portion of Oro Vista Avenue in Sunland, near Eby Canyon Road. Hazardous road conditions now exist within the Riverwood community north of Big Tujunga Canyon Road at the Arizona Crossing. City agencies are working to resolve the issue, but intermittent rain showers continue. Residents are urged not to drive on flooded roads and wait until the water has subsided.
