LAFD Battles Greater Alarm Blaze at South L.A. Mattress Firm
It took 103 Los Angeles Firefighters more than an hour Tuesday morning to fully extinguish a stubborn fire at a South Los Angeles industrial property full of dense flammable storage.
The Los Angeles Fire Department was notified at 7:34 AM on June 9, 2015 of a fire at 11627 South Main Street in South Los Angeles. Firefighters arrived quickly to find heavy fire to the rear of and threatening a 170' x 70' one-story metal clad building that housed a mattress refurbishing company, vehicle storage facility and auto body repair shop.
Battalion Chief Michael Castillo coordinated a fierce initial fire attack with handlines, soon transitioning those in his command to defensive operations as the structure began to fail. LAFD crews extinguished the recalcitrant flames in just 78 minutes. No injuries were reported.
Fire loss to Sleep Perfect Mattress is estimated at $250,000 ($150,000 structure & $100,000 contents). The cause of the greater alarm fire remains under active investigation.
