Thursday, June 25, 2015
North Hills-

Los Angeles Firefighters today extinguished a tree fire that nearly spelled doom for nearby homes. The cause was illegal use of fireworks.

Ladder Truck with firefighters removing burn palms from a treeJust before 7 p.m. on June 25, 2015, firefighters rushed to the North Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles after responding to a tree fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a palm tree well involved in flames in the front yard of a house. A total of 27 firefighters expertly worked to contain the blaze, ensuring the safety of all residents and their homes as they extinguished flames in less than 10 minutes.

The incident was caused by residents playing with bottle rocket type fireworks that launched into a tree.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reminds everyone that all personal use fireworks are illegal in the city of Los Angeles.

In 1981, fireworks were responsible for more than 500 fires and more than $2.1 million in property damage. In the years since, the LAFD's joint Anti-Fireworks Campaign has assisted in significant reductions in fireworks-related incidents and losses throughout the City. In the past ten years, the number of fires caused by fireworks each year has rarely exceeded 50 and property damage has remained well below $50,000.

Please help us continue this progress and avoid near tragedies like today's incident as well as potentially painful injuries by not playing with fireworks. To honor Independence Day, please enjoy a public fireworks show.

Before, during and after Independence Day, please honor our city and country by having a #FireSafeFourth. Visit the site below for more information.
